Beware!!!!!!!!
I had a really bad experience buying a car from a second-hand car trader in Tidmarsh, RG8 8HG; the yard is next to a cattery in Tidmarsh. The address that I bought my car and had all my problems was Glade House Farm, Tidmarsh Lane, Tidmarsh, READING. RG8 8HG.
When I bought my car in August 2015 they were called ‘Berkshire Motor House’; they soon changed their name to ‘Berkshire Auto House’. They have since changed their name a couple of times since to something new.
I had the misfortune of stumbling across Berkshire Auto House from an advert in Autotrader. They advertise all their properties in Autotrader.
I bought a Peugeot 206 from them for £1100 in August 2015; I did a test drive and it seemed fine but I am a layman when it comes to cars and I noticed when driving it home that it struggled to accelerate properly when I put the accelerator down.
£150 admin fee for a refund!
Having researched the Sale of Goods Act 1979 the trader is obliged to fix or refund the car. I called him immediately the next day to say that the car was faulty and requested a repair or a full refund. He said that he would have to charge me a £150 admin fee; I said that this wasn't reasonable and that he was obliged by the Sales of Goods Act to repair the car or refund me and that I shouldn't be the out of pocket over this, but he wouldn't budge.
False warranty claim in original advert
The original advert mentioned a '3 Months Parts Labour warranty', when I quizzed him about this he said that as I'd negotiated £100 off the original asking price for 2 tyres worn below the legal limit that the warranty was no longer valid; at no point did he mention this to me when I asked for some money off - so don't be fooled by the warranty in their adverts.
Refund offer withdrawn and offered only £500 for the car (original cost £1100)!
I decided that I might be able to get the car repaired for less than than £150 by a mechanic; however when inspected it transpires that the the problem is a faulty fuel pump with an estimated cost of £300 to repair. I decided I was prepared to lose out on £150 and called back to arrange the refund, however now they said that as I'd had the car for longer that they weren't prepared to refund me anymore and that all they could do was buy the car back from me for £500 (£600 less than I'd paid them a few days earlier) as it has depreciated in value. I couldn't believe what they were saying, I said that all I had done was drive the car back to my house and had a mechanic come and look at it; he didn't give a damn.
When I said that I'd be forced to take this further and that I would put it in writing he said the only letters he opened were court summons. He also said that he doesn't care if I take him to court as he still won't pay me.
At this point I didn't have many options; I said that if he didn't refund me the full amount that I would write a a blog of my experience advising people to avoid him; he said he didn't care as he just changes the name of his business so nobody would be able to trace him (so it's important that you check the address if you are proposing to buy from him (Farm house, Tidmarsh Lane, Tidmarsh. RG8 8HG)). Beware if you intend to buy from this person as they epitomise all the bad stories that you hear about second hand car salesmen!!
I'm really annoyed that I am out of pocket over this and that this guy has treated me in such a poor fashion, hopefully this blog will stop others from making the same mistake.
Please feel free to comment!
Hi im curruntly having similar issues as yourself however the numbers are in the 1000s not 100s! My car broke down after collection, didnt even make it home! Had to pay repair costs myself am now in the process of court action. He changes his business name from berkshire motor house to berkshire auto house and vice versa, all i can say is avoid at all cost and if anyone else has had issue i urge them to contact trading standards about this dealer and get him stopped from trading.
ReplyDeleteHi, I'm not surprised, I suspect a lot of people will have fallen foul of this operator. Let me know how you get on with your legal route as it's something I'm considering.
DeleteI went to see an Audi TT there today - £3750. The advert said it had just been serviced with an extensive list of all the things it had had done. However the engine management light would not go off - however many times I turned the car on and off. Harris, as he called himself - some sort of an Indian, said that cars are like that if they haven't been used for a while. Yeah right. I checked the dipstick to find what looked more like a drop of diesel on the end than oil, certainly not clean fresh oil between the limits as it should have been if it had just been serviced. There are numerous other issues with the car - reg BU52OXM - that Harris didn't mention in any of the 3 prior phone calls I made even, though I quizzed him. One of the number plates had some blu-tack that was failing to hold it on, the other was just on the back seat! Judging by the untidiness of the front end I also suspect an undeclared front end accident - even the dipstick handle was broken.
ReplyDeleteThere was also a gentleman considering buying a £1500ish shopping trolley - at least he was until I helped him check the oil - guess what? There wasn't any. It was then almost a race to get out of that yard. It only cost me £30 and a day wasted but not a day I can afford to waste - thanks Harris or whatever your name really is.

ReplyDeleteI'm sure some of the cars they sell are fine and are as described; in your case you spotted a fault and negotiated, that's fine. However they are also selling cars that are not fine, with significant problems that they are not highlighting at the point of sale. When these problems are raised with them post sale they are are completely ignoring their obligation under the sale of goods act to replace or repair these cars.
DeleteAll I can say is thank you for taking the time to get this blog up.
ReplyDeleteI saw a BMW 730d sport on autotrader and I saw that in the listing he mentions that included in the sale price is a warranty. I was thinking I would haggle him down a bit as you normally do but after reading your experience and the other comments on here I think I shall just stay away.
I knew that the car was cheaper than others on sale especially as it had a main dealer history but if he is making up receipts up himself I'd rather not risk it.
Thanks again and hopefully others find this blog before they find him.
Thanks for this Blog. Glad I stumbled across this as I was shortly about to go and view a car there. Has anyone reported home yet?
ReplyDeleteThanks for the heads up, I was going to take my daughter there tomorrow to look at a car.
ReplyDeleteThanks god for Google 😊
Thanks for this blog. I am about to go tomorrow to a Prius listed by this company. And it does mention in the advert that the hybrids battery was changed by Toyota 2000 miles ago. I really doubt it after reading this blog.
ReplyDeleteYou should definitely report this to watchdog
ReplyDeleteI can attest to this dealer being not only unreasonable, but also extraordinarily rude. He has a clear disregard for his reputation and I have never heard someone in what is supposed to be a customer facing role be so abusive and vitriolic toward a customer. Avoid at all costs, there are plenty of reputable dealers out there who will be much more pleasant to deal with.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your blog, much appreciated, and you have done a great job by doing this and helping others, I would have gone for a Toyota Prius today, and luckily saw this.
ReplyDeleteGutted but glad I have read this ! I was off Saturday to get the 730d but not now !!

ReplyDeleteHi just to say ive reported this guy to watchdog and i urge others to do the same, name and shame him! Power in numbers people!
ReplyDeleteive recently bought a car from him for 1000, was driving it home and half of the back bumper came off! As well as this, no lights were on when i did the test drive however when i got home the engine, air bag and service lights all came on. Not only this but the car also leaks, the indoor light doesn't work, the acceleration is very jolty and the breaks make the most peculiar sound. Fuming is not the word
ReplyDeleteThey are recently known as Reading Budget Car, and have changed numbers and contact details, I bought a Zafira from them, it overheats, eats oil and doesnt pumps water, basically its knackered, luckily I bought it as a runaround, but ultimately a total waste of £500, did a bank transfer so presume I havent got a leg to stand on.
